Oceanus is a non-profit organization (onlus is the Italian acronym meaning non-profit-making), whose activity is mainly focused on promoting and developing several research projects aiming at the preservation of the aquatic ecosystems and environments, as well as the protection of the aquatic species under increasing threat, and the necessary interaction with human activities.
Among our research projects is to monitor and investigate on acoustic and visual data, together with genetic data of the cetaceans encountered during the navigation.
Cetaceans are marine mammals extremely sensitive to any modification in their living environment; moreover they occupy the top rank in the food chain. Thus they constitute per se one of the most reliable biological gauge for the health status of the sea and deserve primary attention for any evaluation of the marine environment.
With the expeditions aboard our catamarans we want to better understand not only the spreading of marine mammals, but also their genetic relationships and migration patterns.
The final results of our research will provide a wide scientific background that in the long term will be used to create and develop new protocols for the preservation and protection of marine mammals. |
